<작가 노트>

자연을 ‘인간이 만들지 않은 모든 존재와 현상’으로 정의할 때, 우주는 가장 광활한 규모의 자연이 된다.
어린 시절, 작가는 밤하늘의 별을 바라보는 일 말고는 우주와 은하를 짐작할 수 있는 방법을 몰랐다.
처음 은하계라는 개념을 인지하게 된 것은 로켓을 닮은 항공기를 조종하여 우주 공간을 날아다니는 적들을 쏘는 게임, ‘갤러그’ 덕분이었다. 갤러그는 갤럭시(Galaxy)와 나방(蛾:나방 아, 일본어 독음은 ‘가’)의 합성어로, 무려 255판을 깨야 한다.
어른이 되어 게임을 다시 보니, 당연히 기괴한 외계 생명체를 닮아 있을 줄 알았던 적들이 자연의 존재인 벌, 나비, 딱정벌레, 전갈의 모습을 하고 있는 것을 발견한다. 로켓을 쏘아 귀여운 생명체들을 죽이면서 전진하고 있었던 것이다.
우주 공간을 날아다니는 공격 대상이 자연에서 온 생명체였음을 알게 되면서 작가는 깨닫는다. 우주란 인간이 사는 지구이고, 인간이 곧 은하라는 것.

작품은 인류에게 파괴를 통한 전진이 아닌, 꽃을 피우는 전진을 일삼자고 속삭인다.
가꾸는 존재로서의 자연에 인공을 접목하고 게임과 예술을 결합한다. 이 경쾌한 리듬감은 우리의 어린 시절 추억을 소환한다. 작품의 역할은 여기까지. 갤러그 최종 255판 이후의 갤럭시가 펼쳐낼 이야기는 우리의 몫이다.
나에게 우주는 지구이고, 은하는 사람입니다.

<Artist's Note>

If nature is defined as “all beings and phenomena not created by humans,” then the universe is nature on its most expansive scale.
As a child, the artist had no way of imagining the universe or galaxies beyond gazing at the stars in the night sky.
The artist’s first awareness of the concept of a galaxy came through Galaga, a video game in which players pilot a rocket-shaped spacecraft, shooting enemies while flying through outer space. The title Galaga is a portmanteau of galaxy and the Japanese word ga (蛾), meaning moth, and the game famously requires clearing 255 stages.
Revisiting the game as an adult, the artist noticed something unexpected: the enemies—once assumed to be grotesque alien life forms—were actually modeled after creatures from nature, such as bees, butterflies, beetles, and scorpions. Progress had been made by shooting and eliminating these small, familiar life forms with rockets.
Realizing that the targets drifting through space were beings derived from nature led the artist to an insight: the universe is the Earth on which humans live, and humans themselves are the galaxy.
This work whispers an alternative to humanity—progress not through destruction, but through blooming.
It fuses the artificial with nature understood as something to be cultivated, and brings together game culture and art. Its light, rhythmic energy calls forth memories of childhood. Here, the work’s role comes to an end.
What unfolds in the galaxy beyond Galaga’s final 255th stage is now left to us.
For me, the universe is the Earth, and the galaxy is people.
